The Ryan Hill Research Foundation (RHRF) is a non-profit foundation established in 1979 by the late Dr. Lucius D. Hill, a Seattle thoracic and vascular surgeon. Dr. Hill was dedicated to developing new surgical techniques to improve the quality of life of his patients who suffered from heartburn symptoms (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD), esophageal cancer, and lung cancer.
The Foundation primarily funds research in diseases of the esophagus, including GERD and Barrett's esophagus (a pre-cancerous esophageal lining). RHRF also funds research in the early detection and treatment of esophageal adenocarcinoma (a type of esophageal cancer that can develop in Barrett's esophagus), lung cancer, and breast disease.
Ryan Hill Mission Statement
Since 1972, the nonprofit Ryan Hill Research Foundation has been at the cutting edge of research into diseases and surgical treatments of the esophagus, as well as the search for causes and cures for cancer. This builds upon the life work of its founder, Dr. Lucius D. Hill, inventor of the Hill Repair for hiatal hernia during the 1960s and pioneer of a vast body of studies in the area of the esophagus. RHRF is committed to contributing to meaningful research regarding esophageal disease and general oncology through the funding of opportunities for basic science and clinical research. By funding research by postgraduate doctors, as well as studies by external groups, this opportunity for focused research time is founded on the principle of physician-directed, basic research free of institutional, government, and/or corporate control. Recruitment of Ryan Hill fellows has historically offered opportunities to appropriate national and international candidates.
The foundation has established a global reputation for routinely contributing to the published international literature regarding the management of esophageal and oncologic diseases. Previous Ryan Hill fellows now occupy some of the most prestigious clinical and academic appointments in national and international medical institutions.
Going forward, RHRF will continue to advance health, patient care, and the general social welfare by remaining a leader in the fields of esophageal and lung disease, as well as fulfilling the vision of the founder, Dr. Hill, to “engage in scientific research toward the advancement of immunology as it relates to the control of various types of cancer,” and research “without limitation” into potential cures, as well as causes/preventions, for cancer and other diseases.

Dr. Lucious Hill and his innovative research in Seattle.
